The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity has officially unveiled its LEGO® brick replica of Liverpool’s first specialist cancer hospital.

Thousands of bricks have already been bought by generous members of the public in a fundraising campaign that aims to raise more than £500,000.

And the start of the ambitious build will tomorrow (Saturday) will go on show to LEGO brick enthusiasts at The Great Brick Adventure at Exhibition Centre Liverpool, which runs over the bank holiday weekend.

The project will eventually see half a million LEGO bricks used to construct a scale model of the new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, currently under construction in Liverpool city centre.

Experts from Bright Bricks will oversee the project and are training an army of local enthusiasts to work on the build.

Meanwhile The Great Brick Adventure includes three interactive zones – more than 80 life sized animals such as Earl Grey the Elephant, Harriet the Hippo and Rocky the Penguin will be on display in the Safari Zone which will also include Brick Pits for children to play in.

Sound and smoke effects surround the interactive Mythical Beasts zone with heroes, monsters and even a hydra and cyclops.

Visitors will be able to take part in combat battles between the Warriorbots in a specially constructed arena and take aim with their catapults as they try and Feed the Frogs.

Ben Williams, commercial director of The ACC Liverpool Group, which includes Exhibition Centre Liverpool, said: “The Great Brick Adventure is a fantastic day out for all the family.

“It is the perfect activity for a bank holiday with lots of fun interactive areas where kids, and of course adults, of all ages can get involved.

“We are pleased that The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity has chosen the exhibition to officially unveil its LEGO brick hospital for the first time and we hope our visitors will support such an important cause.”

Tomorrow LEGO brick fans attending the interactive event in Liverpool will get their chance to buy a brick and place it on the model hospital.

Members of the public are being asked to buy a brick for a £1 donation, culminating in a 1.6m x 2.8m x 1.6m high structure that will be one of the biggest LEGO brick models in the UK.

Katrina Bury, head of The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said: “We are thrilled to be part of The Great Brick Adventure and can’t wait for LEGO brick enthusiasts to see the model so far.

“It is so exciting to see the idea start to take shape and we hope everyone attending the event will want to be part of this unique fundraising opportunity.

“Building a LEGO brick replica of our new cancer hospital in Liverpool is an ambitious project but we are sure our dedicated supporters and the people of the region will support us with enthusiasm and generosity.”

The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity is working to raise £15 million towards the construction of the new specialist cancer hospital in Liverpool city centre and improvements to the Wirral site. The new hospital is due to open in 2020.
